NORTH RIM

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is a lot less crowded than the South Rim.  There are fewer people, but the views are just as awesome.  The North Rim is over 8000 feet high. The highest point is Point Imperial at 8803 feet.  Point Imperial gives great views of the eastern end of Grand Canyon and is the take off point for the Nankoweep Trail.  Another must see point on the North Rim is Cape Royal.  At Cape Royal one can peer through Angel’s Window and look at the Colorado River and the Unkar Delta.  The site of a large pre-puebloan archaeological site.  My favorite point on the North Rim is Dutton Point on the Powell Plateau.  It is a lot harder to get to though.  It requires a long drive on dirt roads to Swamp Point and a hard 15 mile round trip hike.  From Dutton Point one can look into the abyss and see back into the frothy rapids of the Inner Gorge.

The North Rim is not open year round.  It usually opens sometime in May and closes in October.   The summer months are very nice at the North Rim.  The temperatures are very pleasant in the day, but can get really cold during the night.  It is a very beautiful place with a lot of wildlife.
