COLORADO RIVER
GRAND CANYON RAFTING
The Grand Canyon is one of those places that must be experienced to be appreciated. Photos don’t do it justice, books can’t describe it, and movies can’t capture the the sights and sounds the way your senses can. Camp next to a rapid on a clear desert night and you will just begin to understand what I am talking about. Hike across a wildflower filled Surprise Valley between Thunder River and Deer Creek and you will understand a little more. Sit under the mesquite tree at mile 220 during a 125 degree day in July. Visit Tuweep in the dead of winter. Watch the sunrise from Yaki Point. The Grand Canyon gives those who take the time to raft, hike, or sit and watch, a limitless possibility of experiences. Maybe this is why people don’t get tired of the canyon. Many who choose to raft the canyon come back over and over again. Most of the guides who are lucky enough to be in Grand Canyon spend decades living in its depths and even when they decide to get a “real job” they never get the canyon out of their soul. To fully appreciate the canyon you would need an infinite amount of time. Every day, every hour, every minute, every moment the canyon changes. The river has been gouging the insides of the canyon for millions of years, and during this time the canyon continually launches, slides, and catapults boulders, rocks and walls back at it. The sun and moon project ever changing shadows across the river. The thunder storms drop rain into the canyon which trickles into little gullies, that combine with other little gullies that form streams. Then the streams combine with other streams to form massive boulder rolling brown sludge we call flash floods. Some of these floods become larger than the Colorado River itself and completely change their side canyons and the rapids at their confluence with the Colorado.
A Grand Canyon Rafting trip on the Colorado River is probably the best way to experience the Grand Canyon. Not only are the rapids incredible, so are the hikes, camps, stars, side canyons, waterfalls, and just being at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
